IRENE, 24 yo, Milan (Italy)

Irene

Like everyone else, I get my news from online and printed news sources. But only recently, thanks to the Brave New You project, I have started focussing on news headlines and the language used in various news sources to tell narratives, news stories, that feature as protagonists women or members of minorities, e.g. members of the LGBTQ+ community etc.

Having had this experience, in the context of Brave New You, besides making me aware, has allowed me to understand this desire to deconstruct narratives, to change language, and to give people back their voice, who have always been either left out of public debate, or been the object of it.

I’m not the only one who thinks that, it’s not just an Italian problem, but one faced by our generation.

I have become really hopeful, though we still have a long way to go, but there are plenty of young people out there, guys like me, that give me confidence, that make me think that we will find the right words, the right narratives, that will finally break down these beliefs and constructions of reality, which are not only misleading, but also discriminatory and false.
